Bill Pendley is a Mortgage Consultant with Caliber Home Loans in Downers Grove, IL with over 20 years of experience in the mortgage industry. He sits down to chat about how he approaches relationships and how he’s found success by strategically positioning his talents to help him meet prospective clients.
“I picked up a drone and that created a lot of relationships that I didn't realize were even going to come from that. It just started out as a hobby at first. I was working with a bank at the time, so there's a whole different level of compliance when it comes to banking. So, I picked up a drone as a hobby, and I just used it as more of a therapeutic way to get out and take some pictures and videos of some cool landscape. And then next thing you know, I was introduced to a photographer and I just asked her, do you need a drone guy? And she goes, ‘actually, yes.’ And I was like, ‘Oh gosh, put me right in front of somebody that I don't know anything about, but I would be willing to do whatever you need me to do.’ So, she hired me one or two times on a trial basis. She liked what she saw and so next thing you know, I started meeting agents while I was doing this.”
Despite the success Bill found in meeting prospects, he admits that it presented another challenge: his brand identity. He discovered that people started to relate to him for his drone work and weren’t seeing him as the mortgage consultant he hoped they would. That’s when Bill says he started tuning his personal brand to be one of mortgages + drones, and not the other way around.
“I need to make sure people know what I do that actually pays my bills as a loan. So, if you want me to help you, I can help you in both areas. I've had people that kind of use it as a way to kind of check me out and see what I'm doing.”
