On this episode of the Real Estate Moguls Podcast, TJ Rubin, President and Founder of Fulton Grace Realty, sits down with us to tell us more about his interesting trajectory into the market.
An attorney by trade, TJ moved to Chicago from Nashville, TN in 2005. After practicing law for a few years here, he saved up to buy his first small apartment building. Attorney by day and landlord by night, he gained a lot of experience in renting very quickly from dealing with renters themselves to HVAC and plumbing.
After losing his day job in law in 2008, he decided to follow his hobby of being a landlord full time. It went from renting his own units to helping others rent theirs to eventually working with developers. A passion for entrepreneurship was born.
“There was a fire that started burning after I started renting some apartments on my own and I realized that I really liked this business and I liked doing it.”
Now at his own firm, Fulton Grace, he works with his team to, in his words, “build something beautiful and blaze our own trail.”
TJ discusses what it’s like to start your own business in the Real Estate industry, especially when you’ve never worked at another firm before, unlike many of his current team members. For TJ, though, it’s all about the people behind the name and the brand.
“I think we've really developed the brand and the name and did something special, but it has to do with the people behind it. The name doesn't make the company, it's the other way around.”
